You must be at least 16 years old to work at the library.

• Most positions require you to submit an application and resume via our Career Portal. If you are applying for a library aide position, however, you do not need to submit a resume.

• The hiring manager reviews the applicants for an open position and contacts the most qualified candidates to come in for an interview.
• If selected for an interview, you will be contacted via email, text, or phone to set up a time.

Positions are posted for at least one week, and positions that have been filled are promptly removed from the site.

You will be sent verification that your application has been received through our Career Portal. We are not able to respond to individual questions about receipt of applications. No phone calls, please.

1. We use a two-step interview process. The first interview is short and conducted over Zoom. We’ll ask you a few questions and tell you a little about the library and the job you are applying for. We ask you to be concise but complete in your answers.
2. There are usually two or three people on the interview panel. One will be the hiring manager, and one will be the Human Resources Officer or an Administrator.
3. We use a behavioral interview method. If you’re not familiar with this style of interview, you can read about it here.
4. After the Zoom call is over, the panel will decide whether or not to proceed to a second (and in some cases, a third) interview with you. Depending on the position, we may ask you to prepare a demonstration or take a test.
5. Once a candidate is selected, we complete a background check and check references. Then, we offer the job.

• Visit Shaker Main Library and the Bertram Woods Branch to get a feel for our buildings, customer service style, and offerings.
• Over the course of the two interviews, we will ask about the following topics: job knowledge and skills, customer service experience, communication skills, ethics and values, innovation, accountability and personal responsibility, teamwork, technology, and equity and inclusion. Prepare stories and examples related to each of these categories from your past work history and other relevant experience. Draw on your past customer service interactions and outcomes.
• We also recommend that you read our Mission, Vision, and Values and our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement and our Customer Service Philosophy before you come to the interview.
• Remember, we want you to feel comfortable and prepared so you can succeed!

Full-time and half-time employees earn generous ETO (earned time off), and accruals begin on day 1. Medical, dental, and vision benefits are available on day 1 of employment for full-time employees. All positions earn sick time.
